9th Anniversary of the assassination of Abu al-Bara Syria
- November 1, 2025
Abu Muhajer, from the Editorial Committee of the newspaper The Truth of the Oppressed of Syria
“We pay homage to Abu Al Baraa, because the struggle we waged together was the program with which the revolution would have succeeded (...) It brought down Al Assad, but did not succeed. It is only able to succeed with a government of the workers and poor peasants, of the committees that they knew how to establish, and it would suceed not only in Damascus, but in Jerusalem...”
To begin talking about Syria, it must be said that it was utterly destroyed. To prevent the fall of the al-Assad regime, they had to demolish all the cities because millions of exploited people had risen up there. They buried 600,000 martyrs beneath all that rubble. And to this day, neither their homes nor the destroyed infrastructure have been rebuilt. Phone signals are weak, electricity is unavailable, and workers are homeless.
Assad did what he did for 14 years: massacre the Syrian people to prevent them from reaching Jerusalem. To prevent them from uniting with the Palestinian masses and destroying the Zionist-fascist State of Israel. And the more al-Assad massacred, the stronger Zionism became.
Those who claimed that al-Assad and Putin were anti-imperialist are the ones who ended up opening the doors to the biggest agent of imperialism, who lacked firepower and regained it thanks to the massacre of the Syrian revolution. So Zionism went for Palestine and it went for Gaza.
In December 2024, there was no bread, (there was) nothing. And al-Assad was once again guarding the borders of Zionism. The proof lies in the fact that during the waves of solidarity marches with Palestine, with hundreds upon thousands of people around the world raising the Palestinian flag, there were also marches in Syria, but only in areas not under al-Assad's control. There were marches in Idlib with Palestinian flags. But in areas where al-Assad held sway, like Damascus, there were no marches. There was nothing for Palestine.
It was the masses, without bread and carrying the Palestinian flag, which once again attacked al-Assad. They retook the revolution where it had left off, at the gates of Damascus, to overthrow Bashar.
At that moment, the Sunni bourgeoisie, who had betrayed them from within—first disguised as democrats like the generals of the Free Syrian Army, then disguised as Islamists with the current president, Ahmed Sharaa (Abu Mohammed al Jolani)—who had been holding back the masses from confronting al-Assad, could no longer contain them.
Al-jolani acted swiftly, first running to Aleppo, then to Damascus, to take the lead and ensure that the masses would not be the ones in power, but rather that a new agent would emerge to continue the old al-Assad regime in many aspects, but most importantly, in being a servant of Zionism.
When Assad was falling, he was passing the coordinates of the heavy weaponry to Zionism. He said, “These are all the arsenals I used for 14 years to massacre the Syrian masses, and which were in your favor, because I never fired a single shot at you. Now the masses are coming, they are going to take them. They are coming with Palestinian flags, they are coming for you. So blow them up. Here are the coordinates of the weaponry, destroy it”.
The first thing Zionism did was bombing all the heavy weaponry arsenals so the masses would not take them, (and it was) thanks to al-Assad.
And when al-Jolani came to power, Zionism said, “We don't know if he will be able to contain the masses or not,” and sent in tanks and its army and took over the Golan Heights. It took over land in southern Syria. At that moment, al-Jolani said, “They bombed all our heavy weaponry; the Syrian people have endured 14 years of genocide; we cannot wage war against Zionism…” (He said this) When Zionism had already launched its attack! It was already occupying Syria, and al-Jolani was only trying to close all fronts.
The Syrian masses defended their land, raising Palestinian flags and remaining unarmed. Al-jolani's scoundrel bourgeoisie left them completely alone and isolated, while behind the scenes he was meeting with Trump and prepared the "normalization" agreements, also known as the "Abraham Accords," which is the recognition of the Zionist state, as signed by Egypt at Camp David, and by Jordan, those two major tools in the defense of the Zionist state. This was demonstrated by al-Sisi's murderous dictatorship, which besieged Gaza, and by Jordan, which defended its airspace and borders.
Assad also proved to be a servant of Zionism, as al-Jolani proves it as well, and Hezbollah, which sent all its forces together with Iran to massacre Syria while launching nothing more than a couple of firework displays against Zionism. Only when it was attacked they fired a couple of missiles and then never more. Iran even threatened to wage a devastating war. Then Zionism bombed Tehran. But Iran fired a couple of missiles and then went home. Both surrendered and left the Palestinian masses alone.
They were all servants of Zionism and imperialism. They were all part of a two-year siege to the Palestinian masses, which Zionism used to massacre hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who lie under the rubble of Gaza, just as hundreds of thousands of Syrians had been massacred .
In Syria, people are asking, "How can it be that we, who gave our lives against al-Assad, have no homes, while the Assad supporters have all their houses intact and are in power?" Because those who were al-Assad's officials, the governors of the provinces where he dominated, like Latakia or Tartus (where the Russian base is located), are currently in the government. How can Russia still maintain its base? And al-Jolani went to Russia and shook hands with Putin, the murderer of the Syrian people.
Those who gave their lives for the Syrian revolution have no homes, no bread, no jobs; they live hand to mouth. They still live in tents, and they even have 15,000 political prisoners in al-Jolani prisons, people who fought against al-Assad. They are there from the time when al-Jolani closed the fronts and tried to prevent any fight against al- Assad. They are the ones who tried to open the fronts. Our comrades were also imprisoned in those jails for fighting against al-Assad.
What al-Jolani came to do was expropriate that revolution and continue protecting the Zionism border. He came to perpetuate the status of starving, martyred, and plundered Syria, where US imperialism, with its YPG security detail and ten of its own military bases, maintains control over 100% of Syrian oil in the Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa regions, in the north and east.
Al-Jolani came to continue the occupation of Syria. The occupation was carried out by Zionism, the occupation continues to be carried out by Turkey (which never left and still has its armies in the north), the occupation continues to be carried out by Russia with that base it remained at, and the occupation continues to be carried out by the USA with the YPG.
This is the moment when the Syrian vanguard regroups and learns its lessons. And in that sense, we also pay tribute to Abu al- Baraa, because the struggle we waged together was for the program with which the revolution can succeeded.
Today, the revolution overthrew al-Assad, but it did not succeed. The revolution only succeeds with a workers' government, of the poor workers and peasants, of the committees they established, the workers' and soldiers' committees, which are their armed bodies of self-determination.
And it would succeed not only in Damascus, but in Jerusalem, by destroying the Zionist-fascist state of Israel, and with the triumph of the Palestinian resistance over Israel, which is the only way to stop the genocide.
